The primary purpose of Summer Work Travel is to offer young men and women from around the world, the majority of whom are between 18 and 30 years old, an opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of the United States firsthand through a combined cultural and work experience.
All work placements must provide participants with a balanced program, including a meaningful cultural experience, a variety of opportunities to meet Americans, and a chance to learn firsthand about American society, culture and values.
The seasonal and temporary work component of this program is only to help defray expenses and not the primary purpose of this program.
InterExchange is your visa sponsor. Your U.S. host employer is not your visa sponsor.
Although your host employer may terminate their employment relationship with you, they do not have the authority to cancel your visa. Only the U.S. Government or InterExchange has that authority.
If your application is approved and you begin your program with InterExchange in the U.S., you must contact InterExchange if you experience an emergency or any problems throughout your program.
You are required to register in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) within 10 days of your arrival to the United States and every following 30 days, and to notify InterExchange of any change in your address within 10 days of the change.
You are obligated to respond to all requests and inquiries sent from InterExchange.
You are required to leave the United States at the end of your J-1 Visa program.
You are expected to obey all laws and sponsor rules including, but not limited to, treating employer property and housing with respect, refraining from damaging any property, refraining from public disturbances, disorderly conduct, and obeying all local ordinances with regards to drinking age and open container rules. Failure to abide by these rules may result in your program being terminated.
