Societal Factors
All firms should analyze a broad range of societal factors to determine potential threats and opportunities. Changes in one or several factors can influence a firm, including demographic trends, recreational patterns, behavioral patterns, and attitudes toward quality of life, the business community, or women working.
These societal factors often change or evolve slowly, which sometimes makes them difficult to recognize. For instance, the large number of women now in the work force was preceded by changes in both women's and men's attitudes. Very few firms, however, were able to recognize these cangedatittudes, forecast their impact, and formulate appropriate strategy. Other changes occur more rapidly when they are caused by some external interruption in societal behavior patterns. For example. increased interest in energy conservation was spurred by energy shortages and tremendous price increases in the mid-1970s
