Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis (or “Red eye”) is the inflammation of the lining of the white part of the eye (conjunctiva) that is caused by a viral infection. It is often caused by the adenovirus, which causes Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). It is a contagious disease, is very easily transmitted and can be acute. There are often periodic outbreaks of conjunctivitis, especially during the rainy season. Conjunctivitis is spread through close physical contact or sharing items with the infected person, through coughing, or breathing. It is often transmitted in communities such as schools, workplaces, swimming pools and even in shopping centers. Once the person is infected, the symptoms will develop within 1-2 days and the infected person may infect others for as long as two weeks after they have developed the symptoms.
