A rite of passage is a ceremony to mark an important time in our life. Some rites of passage are religious, others are social or family traditions. In Mongolia, the biggest and most important rite of passage for a child is the first haircut. The ceremony happens between the ages of two and six years old. Boys have the first haircut in an odd year (when they are three or five years old). Children wear their best clothes for the event and invite family and close friends, after the haircut the mother keeps the hair and there is a big party.
