Super Typhoon Nepartak makes landfall in Taiwan, brings deluge
Super Typhoon Nepartak made landfall early Friday about 15 kilometers south of Taitung, Taiwan. Sustained winds were at 240 kph (150 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
So far, one death and one injury have been reported by the Taiwan Central Emergency Operations Center.
The storm has been hammering the eastern coast with torrential rain and wind for several hours
Some locations have already seen more than 300 mm (12 inches) of rain in the past 12 hours. The worst conditions will continue to hit central and southern Taiwan for another 12 hours.
At least, 15,224 people have been evacuated. An official told CNN two railway systems in the country are out of service and most flights are canceled throughout the morning.
The storm showered the region with furious winds, rain and power outages, CNN affiliate SETTV reported.
Damage has been reported in some locations where violent gusts caused trees fall and windows to shatter.
