Our review highlights a link between Caribbean adolescents’ mental health and their SRH. Mental health problems decrease one’s ability to make rational choices and increase the likelihood of engagement in risky sexual and other high-risk behavior among youth; the latter was evident in our review [55]. Addi- tionally, family violence, substance use, and mental health within the microsystem and a history of physical and sexual abuse within the chronosystem elevated high-risk sexual behav- iors among adolescents. Because social conditions and mental health are interdependent and interconnected, these aforementioned forces may be one of the impetuses for poor psychosocial well-being and mental health, which subsequently leads to poor SRH [55]. As previously noted, the high levels of violence within communities may play a significant role in youth having poor mental health and subsequent poor SRH choices. However, these suggested interactions and pathways have not been investigated in the literature from the Caribbean and warrant further re- search. In addition to research, the provision of mental health services for adolescents should be coupled with SRH interven- tions and programs.
