Media and growth conditions
Escherichia coli was grown in LB (Sambrook et al. 1989)
medium at 37∞C. Antibiotics were added, as required, at the
following final concentrations (μg/ml): ampicillin 50, kanamycin
20, tetracycline 12.5. B. glumae strains were grown in
PPGA (Nishiyama and Ezuka 1977) medium, King’s B
(King et al. 1954) medium, or LB medium at 28∞, 32∞, or
37∞C. Kanamycin (20μg/ml) and tetracycline (12.5μg/ml)
were added to the media for B. glumae as required. All
antibiotics were purchased from Sigma (St. Louis, MO,
USA).
