The increasing expression of MgAG2 in the sarcotesta appears to be particularly important, in view of the fact that the ectopic expression of a PLENA-like gene of peach in tomato transforms the normally leafy sepals into fleshy structures which ripen like ectopic fruits (Tadiello et al. 2009), and the same occurs when the tomato SHATTERPROOF-like gene TAGL1 is over-expressed in tomato plants (Vrebalov et al. 2009).
We know that only an extremely limited number of examples are available regarding the respective roles played in core Eudicots by genes of the PLENA and euAGAMOUS lineages in fruit development.
