Factors leading to increases above normal in the somatic cell count of milk and the development of clinical mastitis are very varied and complex. Hygiene at milking and in the general environment, appropriate maintenance and correct disinfection of the milking equipment, correct drying o¡ procedure at the end of lactation, selective culling of cows where required and housing/grazing systems are all critical. There is general concern at the extent of use of intramammary antibiotics. Many references now indicate that adequate dietary vitamin E and selenium intakes, above normal nutritive requirements and initiated at the start of the dry period, can be of signi¢cant 496 bene¢t in the reduction of herd somatic cell counts and clinical mastitis. The bene¢t of giving supplementary vitamin E is less when cows are at grass, but dietary selenium may be less than adequate in a much wider range of feeding situations. Responses to both, and consequent increases in the price obtained for milk and reductions in the need for antibiotic treatment, can only realistically be obtained when all other good management practices are adopted.
