Unit 4: Studies
Carter: Hey Natasha Are you going home?
Natasha: No, no, I’m going to my evening class.
Carter: Evening class? For your major?
Natasha: No, no, it’s extracurricular, at the Language Learning Center. Last week I signed up for a basic Japanese language class and today is the first day of class.
Carter: Oh, really? I’ve never known that you’re interested in learning Japanese.
Natasha: I’ve always wanted to know Japanese. I’m interested in Japan and its culture. I’d like to travel there one day. Actually, I’d like to live my life there! (Laugh).
I’ve tried learning Japanese on my own before but…it didn’t work well. I was not sure if I understood something correctly. The grammar is especially hard…the pronunciation, as well. Besides, it is always difficult to stay motivated when studying on my own. So, I decided to take the class.
Do you know that our university’s Language Learning Center offers a variety of foreign language courses, from basic to advanced levels?
Carter: Oh, I never knew that. I’d like to know another language too but…I’m more interested in taking an IT class. I’ve never been very good with computers. I mean I already have a basic understanding of some common computer programs but I feel it’s not quite enough. I want to learn how to organize my work, keep records, and store information effectively.
Natasha: Very well, then. I think you should enroll on an IT & computer skills course at the IT Learning Center. They offer the course for half price if you’re a student here.
Carter: Really? Fantastic!
Natasha: Yeah, my roommate just talked about it last night. Anyway, there are a number of interesting courses for you to choose from; for example ‘Keyboard & Typing Skills,’ ‘Basic Computer Skills for School and Work,’ ‘Microsoft Office Master,’ ‘Web Design,’ ‘Software and Computer Media Applications,’ and so on. I’m not sure which one would suit your needs. Perhaps you should go to the ITLC and ask them for more details.
Carter: Okay. Do you know when the last day to sign up for these classes is?
Natasha: I think they’re open for registration until this Friday, but I’m not pretty sure about that either.
Carter: Oh, okay. I had better hurry then. Thanks a lot, Natasha.
Natasha: You’re welcome. I think I had better hurry too. I don’t want to be late for my first class. There might be a pre-test or something. Bye
Carter: Bye.
