Ultimately, we realize that we are the same as the universe, which is the Dharmakaya, the Buddha Consciousness that comprises all of existence.
The Dharmakaya is the original primordial Adi-Buddha. This Buddha is often taken to represent the original pure state of emptiness, before any polluting karma has entered the world.
When paired with a female consort, the Buddha represents compassion, and his consort wisdom. These are the essential qualities in Mahayana practice. When portrayed together, the couple are known as “yab-yum,” meaning “father-mother.”
