The intervention was provided at two hospitals under the
supervision of a nurse. Patients in the experimental group
received the nurse-led intensive educational programme by
a specially trained and experienced nephrology nurse.
Except for handing out educational materials (booklet), the
nephrology nurse offered individual education and educational
session to participants in the experimental group.
Individual education was given when participants underwent
HD treatment, 20–30 minutes, 2–3 times a week for
six consecutive months. We adopted dialogue form during
this individual education. Educational session was executed
on a monthly basis for six consecutive months at the HD
units of two hospitals. Participants or their relatives were
invited to the session. Our session adopted a PowerPointlecture about the general knowledge of phosphorus and the
phosphate binders, the method to maintain balance of
phosphorus, etc. The PowerPoint presentation included colourful
pictures of high-phosphorus foods.
Control subjects received usual medical and social care,
but no educational materials. The same educational
programme was delivered to them after completing data
collection.
