Pronunciation of Sanskrit Loanwords in Thai Language
The words created from Sanskrit came to exist in Thai Language in a huge number through Mahayana Buddhism and Brahmanism. To Thai language Sanskrit is often found helpful for the system of construction of new words. Whenever there is necessity to construct a new word, especially for a new technical term, Thai scholars often consult Sanskrit. On the basis of the differences between Thai language and Sanskrit in their families and their structures the system of borrowing and using the words from Sanskrit has several steps. The pronunciation of Sanskrit loanwords in Thai language is an interesting part. In comparison with their originals in Sanskrit the various changes and applications are found in Sanskrit loanwords. Some changes are made to consonants, others to vowels. That means Thai people have adjusted the sounds of those words to be appropriate for their tongues. The matter that is most interesting is that the tones are fixed to those loanwords and many meanings of those have been changed from their originals.
