There are also traditions of women dancers, generally derived from rituals for spirits or deities. On example is Gandrung, a kind of performance in eastern extremity of Java. This is said to have started as a ritual performance for the goddess of rice and fertility (Devi Sri or Lakshmi). This ritual was intended to increase fertility in agriculture. The word gandrung means “love” in Javanese.Due to Islamic influence, the original ritual context has been lost, so that the performance continues today as a kind of entertainment. The singer is generally an unmarried young woman or a tranvestite. She is accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.During the performance audience members give money to the singer to show their favor.
