The origin of the Confederacy, affirmative action and Cesar Chavez have all been key talking points in the battle over Texas' social studies curriculum.
The Texas Board of Education is considering over 100 proposed textbooks that will be used by public schoolchildren statewide, and not everyone is in agreement about what should be inside them.
Case in point: On Sept. 16, Katherine Wellman, a history professor at Southern Methodist University, voiced her disapproval at the inclusion of Moses and his role in the creation of the United States.
"We do our students a disservice when we scrub our history clean of unpleasant truths, and when we present an inaccurate view of the past that promotes a simple-minded, ideologically driven point of view," said Jacqueline Jones, the University of Texas at Austin Department of History chair.
