‘So we are breaking up,’ Shin Hye responded. Even as she said the words, everything still felt surreal. This is all happening so fast. ‘It’s the same thing oppa. You just don’t want it to seem that way.’
Min Ho took Shin Hye’s hands in his. ‘No, no, no. I don’t mean we should break up,’ he replied. ‘I mean let’s take some time off to really understand what we want from this. If we’re both ready to sacrifice who we are to be with each other. Because I know I’m ready, Shin Hye. But I don’t think you are.’
Shin Hye looked up at him in disbelief. ‘So I’m the problem? I’m the one who isn’t in this?’ She broke free from Min Ho’s hands and stood up.
‘That’s not what I mean Shin Hye, please sit down,’ Min Ho pleaded, reaching for her hand.
She took a step back to dodge his hand. ‘You never gave me a chance to talk oppa so please listen to me now,’ she spoke, her voice steadier. ‘I admit that I was wrong for not answering your calls. I hate myself for shutting you out at a time you needed me and if I could do it over, I’d call you every day. But you’re being unfair,’ her voice faltered. She cleared her throat and steadied herself. ‘You know who we are and what’s at stake here. Just because you’re willing to be more reckless doesn’t mean you want this relationship more, or you love me more. Because I love you so much you have no idea,’ she paused to wipe her tears. ‘Hiding this relationship was the only way I could think of being with you but still being able to protect you. But if even that doesn’t work then maybe you’re right. There is no middle ground and we have to choose.’
Min Ho looked up at her miserably. She wasn't sure if it was pain she was seeing, or pity.
‘There’s no middle ground between being in a relationship and not being in one either,’ she continued. ‘So you need to decide right now. I need to know where we stand so I know what to do from here on out.’
Min Ho held Shin Hye’s gaze for a long time. His eyes were starting to water, too. She could feel her heart pounding as she waited for a response. Please oppa. Please fight for me.
A tear ran down his cheek. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said faintly before looking down.
Shin Hye felt the walls closing in. It was as if something was blocking her lungs because she suddenly couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t stop the tears so she turned around and covered her mouth with her hand, muffling a sob. Not here, Shin Hye. Not in front of him, she told herself. She clenched her jaw and forced herself to get it together. With every ounce of energy she can gather, she spoke the last words she’ll say to him in a long time.
‘Don’t be. I get it. Annyeong, oppa,’ she said before heading out the door.
