This example is interesting because it reveals the intra-household divisions that can have an impact on
household livelihoods. Mr. Seng’s daughter left home
because of poverty and a wish to escape the drudgery of
upland farming. She took up work against the wishes of
her father yet remitted money home that, Mr. Seng
admitted, was crucial during times of household hardship.
Her experience of the city was also drawing her
away from the village and her family––and more than in
just geographical terms. She had changed, her parents
claimed, with a taste for a more comfortable life and a
desire to escape not just farming but the village in social
and cultural terms too. In this case we also have the possibility that developments beyond the village were
rework livelihoods in the village.
