The key to successful HR planning is going beyond integrating strategy-MR management (Exhibit 1), and going beyond focusing on strategy-mindset-HR linkages (Exhibit 2), to creating linkages between customers and employees. (Exhibit 2 omitted) Unity can be established between revenue-producing customers outside the firm and employees inside the firm. The strategic component focuses on customers; the human resource component focuses on employees. When a strategic and human resource planning process is fully integrated, customers and employees come to agreement about organizational ends (strategies, goals, missions, and visions), and the means to be used to reach the ends (structure, staffing, rewards, etc.). A unity exists when customers and employees are jointly aware of, accept, and act on a shared mindset about the firm.
