Those subjects have the content about the play from each period. From University of Phayao, British Drama and American Drama course syllabus, both drama courses are one of the required subject students who took literature stream have to study. For example, there are three objectives of British drama course. In this class, the students will be able to:
1. identify the major developments in British drama from the Middle Ages to the 21st century
2. analyze and contextualize the social and cultural conditions of the period
3. develop their creative and critical thinking skills in written and oral formats at various levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation
However, in American Drama course, the objectives are similar to British Drama course. Thus, we can see that these courses aim to understand language culture and society of native speak and can use English communicate with one who has different culture effectively. To study British and American drama help student develop critical thinking skill. Moreover, these courses offer the student to study background and elements of each type of Drama in both United Kingdom and United State, and study both British and American playwright’s work in required. However, although studying drama is important, sometimes some students in university of Phayao skip the class, and when students have presentation about the play, they always misunderstand the content in the play. In addition, a study, Difficulties Students Face in Understanding Drama in English Literature at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) also indicated that “students face this major difficulty in learning drama. Over 70% of the students agreed that “students feel frustrated with the length of a play,” “Extensive use of symbolism, similes, metaphor,” and “writing style” were serious problems.” (Shakfa, 2012) Then, we can see that students in Islamic University of Gaza also have problem in study drama as well. Moreover, some students do not want to learn drama which is important for literature stream students. Thus, from those reasons, they intended our group to learn and study to find out the problem of studying British Drama and American Drama of literature stream English senior students, academic year 2014.
