Resources’ related factors can be considered as a third aspect of warehouse management
that should not be ignored when examining the impact of RFID. According to Ackerman
(1997), there are three prime elements that distinguish the warehouses: labor, storage
and picking equipment and capacity utilisation (Table IV). Trying to give an example of
how these factors may influence the impact of RFID, let us give an example. Owing to
seasonal demand patterns, different levels of storage utilisation are observed in any
warehouse, i.e. different percentages of occupied storage space. Therefore, we employ
different levels of storage utilisation as a “decision variable” for the deployment of RFID.
The results may indicate that the RFID-enabled processes are further improved
(i.e. shortened) as the system load increases.
