Few studies have compared trap survey efforts in
different habitat types. A survey using passive windowpane
traps suggested old-growth reserves had
higher species richness than managed forests, but similar
abundance was found across the stand types (Martikainen
et al. 1999). A higher abundance of scolytids
and cerambycids, as well as higher species richness,
were found in semiochemical-baited traps placed
within a shelterwood treatment compared with along
the margins of clearcuts and in-tact mature forest
(Dodds et al. 2010). Other studies relating stand type
to insect abundance or diversity in traps have been
mixed (Martikainen et al. 1996, Simila¨ et al. 2003,
Newell and King 2009). The low catches in the closed
canopy stand in experiment 1 were surprising in that
there was more diverse habitat available (i.e., tree
species, coarse woody debris decay classes) for woodinhabiting
insects than in other habitat types. Perhaps
the closed canopy conifer stand offered habitat options
other than traps that were not available in the
thinned stands and insects responding to volatiles
from traps found this material.

Experiment 2: Trap Placement. The habitat type
experiment suggested there were differences among
the habitat types tested in terms of total numbers and
species richness of scolytids and cerambycids. Placement
of traps in relation to stand boundaries also
seems to be an important variable in surveys based on
results from the trap placement experiment. Traps
placed under a closed canopy forest and along a forested
edge generally caught more insects and had
higher species richness than traps placed in a clearing
adjacent to the forest stand. However, the most unique
species were captured in traps along the forest edge
and in the clearing.
Insects will often respond over large distances to
pheromones (Dodds and Ross 2002), but less is known
about attraction distances of host volatile baited traps
and to what degree they attract insects from outside
a stand. Although little work has been completed directly
related to trapping and trap placement, a series
of studies have investigated the relationship of insects
to edge habitats and forest settings (Peltonen et al.
1997). Some species may be found more often under
closed canopy forests (Peltonen and Helio¨ vaara
1998), whereas other species are either found more on
the edge or beneÞt from conditions related to edge
habitat (Peltonen 1999). Studies that have investigated
the effects of trap placement with semiochemical-
baited traps have found mixed results in terms of
habitat preference (Che´ nier and Philogene 1989,
Brockerhoff et al. 2006). Results from the trap placement
experiment also were mixed, but in general more
insects were captured in traps under the closed canopy
or at the edge versus traps in clearings. Potential
explanations for the discrepancy in trap catches could
be differences in host volatile plume behavior at the
trap (Thistle et al. 2004) or attraction distances of
semiochemicals.
Applications to Trapping Programs. It is possible to
gain insight into factors inßuencing trapping results
for exotic species by using native species as surrogates
(Dodds et al. 2010). Data reported here suggest that
sites with recent disturbance may facilitate increased
trap catches and species richness compared with
closed canopy hardwood or relatively undisturbed
conifer dominated stands. Although hardwood stands
are often avoided during exotic bark and woodborer
surveys, closed canopy conifer dominated stands are
often the focus of survey efforts, but these do not seem
to be optimal places for traps. After prioritizing based
on risk of introduction, agencies deploying traps for
exotic species surveys should concentrate on stands
with some level of disturbance, either natural or anthropogenic,
to optimize efforts.
