The existing productive version of the academic section of the Vocabulary Levels Test is based on the University Levels Test and contains only 18 items. Therefore, it is necessary to design a new productive vocabulary test that is based on the Academic Word List and contains 30 items. For each item in the test, a meaningful sentence context was
presented and the first few letters of the target words were given to the learners. The purpose of providing the
first few letters was to prevent learners from filling in the sentence with another word which would be both
grammatically and semantically correct but which comes from a different frequency level.
