Probiotic strains were obtained in pure culture from Sacco S.r.l.
(Cadorago, Italy). The strains included Bifidobacterium animalis ssp
lactis, Enterococcus faecium (n ¼ 2), Lactobacillus plantarum (n ¼ 4),
Lactobacillus rhamnosus (n ¼ 3), Lactobacillus casei (n ¼ 2) and one
each of Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus
brevis, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus sakei (Table 1).
All strains were grown on ManeRogosaeSharp (MRS) agar (Oxoid,
Roskilde, Denmark) aerobically for 48 h at 37 C, except B. animalis
ssp lactis, which was grown anaerobically under otherwise identical
conditions. Anti-clostridial activity was measured on the
reference strains C. difficile ATCC 10898 (ribotype 078, toxinotype V,
NAP7, tcdAþ, tcdBþ, cdtþ) and C. perfringens NTCT 3180
