Results in co-digestion of multiple feedstocks showed that sustainable energy balance is achievable both with energy crop-agricultural residue and MSW-food residue feedstock mixtures, which provides a basis for feedstock flexibility. However, feedstock mixtures of predominantly agricultural and food industry residues accounted for just 1% of impacts on agricultural land occupation, compared to the co-digestion of predominantly energy crop feedstock. Therefore, to maximize the environmental impacts mitigation, higher proportion of agricultural residues and organic waste streams should be included in co-digestion.
