One might expect regarding licensing that
Japanese companies will have at least as positive an
attitude towards and be at least as likely to take
active steps towards licensing out technology as UK
companies. Also, that they will license out technology
not only to Western countries but also to a
significant number of Asian countries. This is confirmed
by the present research. However, whilst
overall attitudes to licensing in seem similar, there is
a distinction between such attitudes and actions regarding
active searching for technology for licensing
in, with Japanese companies being significantly more
interested in such searching than UK companies. At
the same time, though cross-licensing data is hard to
obtain, it also plays an important part in Japanese
licensing practice.
