Many plant propagules are not true seeds, but are, in fact, fruits or fruit segments containing seeds. In many cases, it is difficult to recognize the difference between a true seed and a seed-like fruit. Strictly defined, a fruit is a ripened ovary. However, a broader definition more commonly used recognizes the fruit as a derivative of the gynoecium and any other extracarpellary parts the gynoecium may be united with during maturation.
