Bacillus thuringiensis, a gram-positive soil bacterium,
produces crystalline inclusions during sporulation,
which contain insecticidal proteins called d-endotoxins.
The expression of d-endotoxins in transgenic plants
has provided a very effective means to control economically
important insect pests. This method ofpest
management has brought about a reduction in the
use ofbroad -spectrum chemical pesticides, thereby
reducing the ecological damage (McGaughey and
Whalon, 1992). Tomato engineered with the insecticidal
cry1Ab gene (s) from B. thuringiensis has been reported
to provide protection to the plants against tomato fruit
worm (Fischhoff et al., 1987; Vaeck et al., 1989). In this
study, we evaluated the potential use oftrans genic
tomato plants, expressing a cry1Ab gene from B.
thuringiensis, to control H. armigera under Indian
conditions.
