A
perinatal unit is poised to launch its newest
performance improvement project to improve
the management of obstetric hemorrhage. The
unit’s implementation team has engaged admin-
istration for needed resources and support, re-
searched all the essential elements of maternal
hemorrhage management that must be taught to
all staff, and joined a maternal hemorrhage state
collaborative to learn from other health care teams
in the improvement process. Although the project
plan is to measure patient outcomes, no method
was found to measure the effectiveness of imple-
mentation as a daily function on how the perinatal
team and related disciplines are performing the
new elements of care. As with many performance
improvement plans, months may go by before the
implementation team realizes staff never incorpo-
rated the new elements into practice, some of the
proposed interventions did not get the desired re-
sults, and patient outcomes did not improve
