The tissues of plants growing in saline media generally exhibit an accumulation of NaC and ClK and/or the inhibited
uptake of mineral nutrients, especially Ca2C, KC, N and P (Kaya et al., 2001). The mechanisms of growth inhibition
include disturbance of plant water retention, due to the high osmotic potential of the external medium, and adverse effects on gas exchange, photosynthesis and protein synthesis (Romero-Aranda et al., 2001). The adverse effect of soil
salinity on plants will depend on the plant tolerance.
