2.2. Manufacturing Lines
2.2.1. CL
The CL is a traditional production line. It uses standalone
machines separated by one-meter walkways.
Each machine has its own infrastructure facility attached
(i.e., electrical power, exhaust, water coolant).
FOL workers are functional specialists; each worker
handles only one or two machines with the same process
routine. All the machines are arranged in a conventional
layout as shown in Figure 2. The machines at
theCL EOLassembly processes are mostly stand-alone.
Thus, the production batches have to be carried from
one machine to another. The machine speeds in CL
are slower, and more manual adjustment is required to
set up the machines. The advantages of CL are flexibility
in small batch production and easy conversion for
custom-made products compared to LPL.
