Phra Prathom Chedi is one of the most significant Buddhist sanctuaries in Thailand. Historical records say it was the country’s biggest stupa built by Sona Thera Monk and Uttara Thera Monk. They came from India as delegates to spread the teachings of the Lord Buddha in Nakhon Pathom Province around BE 300. They built the oval-shaped stupa based on the great stupa at Sanchi in India. It was originally called “Phra Thom Chedi”. King Rama IV later renamed it to “Phra Pathom Chedi” with the belief that it was the first stupa of Suvannabhumi (literally translated as land of gold. referring to Thailand).

The oval-shaped Phra Pathom Chedi is 120.45 meters in height and 235.50 meters in circumference with relics of the Lord Buddha kept inside. The original height of the stupa was only 84 meters until King Rama IV commissioned the construction of the new stupa to cover the old one. The stupa has undergone continuous renovations till the present. Monk residences have later been added around the structure.

Attractions
Phra Ruang Rotchanarit is the Buddha image invited from Si Satchanalai (or known today as a district in Sukhothai Province) by King Rama VI. During that time, the Buddha image was largely damaged with the body missing. The King restored it back to its original beauty. Underneath the pedestal are the cremated remains of King Rama VI.
