A number of authorities have recommended
hypnosis for the relief of cancer
pain (47 — 50). There have been few
studies of its efficacy, however, and none
of them have been controlled. Butler (51)
reported that 5 of the 12 cancer patients he
treated clearly benefited and concluded
that the depth of hypnosis determined its
effectiveness. Worthwhile relief was confined
to those who achieved a deep or
somnabulistic trance.
