Chlorate was detected. Currently there is no MRL value existing for chlorate only interims level which are 0.1
mg/kg for all products of plant origin apart from vegetables. However, based on the EFSA (European Food
Safety Authority) risk evaluation dated June 23, 2015 the ARfD (Acute reference dose) is now evaluated with
36μg chlorate/per kg body weight/day. Therefore, all detected positive chlorate values can be calculated with
this reference. Based on this a consumer health risk with the detected amount of 0,02mg/kg Chlorate
(calculated to juice) can be ruled out.
Nevertheless, we recommend to trace back the source for the chlorate contamination and to try to reduce as
much as possible. In many cases the applied chlorine for disinfection of the water used for the fruit washing
or the chlorinated cleaning agents for machinery are the reason and can be applied/monitored in a better
way.
