The ‘‘Saccharum complex’’ consists of five species of the genus Saccharum plus closely related genera including Erianthus sect. Ripidium, Miscanthus sect. Diandra Keng, Narenga and Sclerostachya [1]. Most modern sugar cane cultivars (Saccharum spp.) are derived principally from hybrids of interspecific crosses between a small number of Saccharum officinarum and S. spontaneum clones [2].
