I heard him enter the house. He threw his keys on the shoe cupboard next to the door. They landed with a loud clink on the aluminum surface. He kicked his sneakers off and threw his jacket on the back of the couch. I have told him over a million times that he should hang it on the coatrack, but today it didn’t even bother me the slightest bit. These days the little things that had once annoyed me, were the least of my cares. I tried to remember when these indifferent feelings had developed. He plopped down on the couch next to me and disrupted my thoughts. “Hey, how was your day?” I asked automatically, like a pre-programmed robot. “Good” he said in a distracted tone. “I made dinner. It’s on the dining table if you are hungry” I said. “Yeah, thanks” he said. His eyes were locked on the television screen which played some silly soap opera. I got up from the couch and decided to do the laundry, because I didn’t want to spend another evening in complete silence. I went down to the basement and checked the hamper to see if there were any clothes inside it. We, well he had maids who could do all of these tasks, but I was used to doing everything myself. I didn’t like bothering them with such small chores. These chores had kept me occupied during these quiet and lonely days. I put a few of his t-shirts and shorts into the washing machine. After that I went back to the living room. I found him sitting at the dining table, poking his salad with a fork. His gaze met mine and he smiled. I didn’t know how to react for a split second, but then I returned the smile. “Can we talk?” he suddenly asked. “Sure” I mumbled. I wondered what he wanted to talk about, because I couldn’t remember the last time we had talked properly. “Sit down” he said and pointed to a chair next to him. I took a seat with a confused feeling. He put his fork down. There was an uneasy look plastered on his face. “What is it?” I asked. “Let’s end this, let’s break up” he said with an impassive face.
