The UKPDS population was
likely to be at lower risk of complications than other diabetic populations. Hence, the incidence rates we report are perhaps lower than might be observed in other diabetic populations as the cohort was newly diagnosed with diabetes, excluded old or ill patients, and contained a small proportion (6%) of participants with impaired fasting glycaemia.38 None the less, the decrease in relative risk is unlikely to be different from other diabetic populations.
