The “estratos de Almada” are part of the infillings
of the Cañadón Asfalto Basin, a large-scale
hemigraben structure that developed in the course
of the initial rifting of the supercontinent of Gondwana
during the Triassic and Early Jurassic and
suffered some compressive stresses in the Neogene
(Figari and Courtade, 1993; Figari, 2005).
Figari and Courtade (1993; see also Page et al.,
1999; Figari, 2005) subdivided the sedimentary
infill of this basin in a sequence stratigraphic
approach into four megasequences (megasequence
0 to megasequence III), representing different
phases in the evolution of the basin, with
sediments and volcanic rocks ranging from the
