Copper is one of the most widespread heavy metal contaminants in the environment and is considered to be very toxic to living organisms. In fact,
excessive intake of copper by humans results in its accumulation in the liver producing gastrointestinal problems. Moreover, it can cause kidney damage, severe headaches, hair loss, hypoglycemia, increased heart rate, nausea, widespread capillary damage and central nervous system irritation followed by depression (Aksu and Isoglu, 2005; Aman et al., 2008; Benaissa and Elouchdi, 2007).
