This case introduces some of the essential elements of HRM and contrasts traditional views of personnel
management with contemporary HRM. The specialist role of the HRM professional within organisations is
considered, along with strategic challenges. Finally, various structures for the HRM function within the organisation,
including options for outsourcing, are considered. This is an introductory case study, aimed at sensitising students to
the various activities involved in managing people; students need to consider which activities require specialist
support.
