Among bacterial isolates, Pseudomonas sp. (NCCP-840) showed notable reduction in the concentration of heavy metals from effluent sample, as reported previously (Adour et al., 1999). It has been reported that the cell walls of gram negative bacteria are fairly thinner than the gram-positive ones and are also not heavily crosslinked due to the presence of lipopolysaccharide, phospholipids, and proteins (Remacle, 1990).
These findings are in accordance with the results of Adour et al. (1999) who reported that Pseudomonas sp. is having a high potential of biosorption for heavy metals. It was observed that at high concentration, microbes showed high reduction of metals.
Metal removal potential of isolated strains was noted at extreme at high metal concentrations. At low metal concentrations in effluent, the biodegradation potential of the bacteria was not fully utilized.
