Syntheses (protocol above) result in Si-ZSM-5 when 1OH is used as the SDA. When 2OH is the only organic in the synthesis mixture, no crystalline product is recovered after more than 2 weeks at 125°C. The powder XRD plots are shown in Fig. 2 for the synthesis products; Si-ZSM-5 synthesized with TPA is also shown for comparison. The diffraction pattern for 1OH-ZSM-5 shows that MFI-type molecular sieve is the only product formed. Therefore, ethanoltripropylammonium can act as a structure-directing agent for Si-ZSM-5. 2OH is unable to direct the formation of pure-silica MFI. This is consistent with the previous report by Burkett and Davis that TEOA does not form Si-ZSM-5 under similar conditions
