Most importantly, Buchanan et al. [25] have reported significant
reduction in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Latino women who
were former GDM. The short period of observation during
pregnancy makes women with GDM an excellent target for
preventive measures, with benefits for the patients and their
offspring [26]. Thus studying the knowledge base for the risks for
type 2 diabetes for the mother and the fetus/offspring could be
important in developing programs for prevention of future type 2
diabetes.
