Lau and Lam (2004) found that the anorectal procedure was the method most associated with postoperative urinary retention compared to the other types operations. The urinary retention prevalence rate was 26.7% following anorectal surgery (Lau & Lam 2004). Toyonaga et al. (2006) found that the prevalence of urinary retention of haemorrhoidectomy (21.9%) was higher than that of other anorectal procedures (from 2.3-19.8%). A search of past PubMed literature, 1991-2001, revealed two retrospective studies reporting a variance in the prevalence (78.1 and 18.8%) of urine retention after haemorrhoidectomy in Taiwan (Chao et al. 1991, Lin 2001). These two study samples focused on the north and middle of Taiwan and demonstrated a very big difference between these regions. Meanwhile, studies exploring the prevalence of posthaemorrhoidectomy urine retention in southern Taiwan are rare and should likely be increased if we are to better grasp any potential regional correltion for prevalence and severity of the complication;thus the intent of this study.
