We can trace our roots back all the way to 1983, the year in which Artemia Systems NV was founded by two monumental people in the aquaculture industry: Philippe Léger (our CEO) and Patrick Sorgeloos (Scientific Advisor). As a spin-off company from the University of Ghent (BE), we were the first to market Artemia cysts with quality guarantees. Shortly after, the first well-known selco products were introduced together with the pioneering dry diet range for shrimp: LANSY-Shrimp.

The big break-through, however, didn’t come until 1991 when Artemia Systems NV was acquired by INVE, a family-owned group that until then mainly focused on the agriculture business. INVE saw the potential of aquaculture as a whole and decided to heavily invest in its new business unit “INVE Aquaculture”. That same year, a production plant was set up in Belgium and during the next few years, the high-quality FRiPPAK range became part of the product portfolio, INVE Centers were set up in the major aquaculture markets, INVE Shops were set up in parts of Asia and in 1996, the INVE Group acquired 50% of the Artemia harvest rights in the Great Salt Lake. By the end of the 90s, we were finally able to offer a complete product portfolio (nutrition and health) to the market.

In 2001, another milestone was achieved. Realizing the future of the industry lies in Asia, INVE set up a state-of-the-art production plant in one of the most promising markets: Thailand. The year after, “INVE Technologies NV” was set up in Dendermonde, Belgium to really drive the focus on innovation, as evidenced by the release of the revolutionary SEP-Art Technology in 2009. To this date, these two sites remain our most important production and R&D facilities.

In 2013, we celebrated our 30th anniversary, an unprecedented feat in our field. In the same year, INVE Aquaculture and all of its subsidiaries became a group of self-governing companies.

All in all, it has been an exciting ride. We have been fortunate to see aquaculture evolve from small-scale, often struggling operations to the industry it is today: a sustainable way of rearing seafood.

As time goes on, aquaculture will more and more become a vital part of the world’s food production, and we hope to continue working towards growing this wonderful industry, shapingaquaculturetogether.
