Immunization clinics were set up at affected schools. The student list from the schools was cross
referenced with Manitoba Immunization Monitoring System (MIMS) records to identify students
who were un- or under-immunized. Letters were then sent to the families of these children
informing them of their child’s immunization status as well as informing them of the time and
location of the immunization clinic. In addition, families received information sheets regarding
both mumps and the MMR vaccine. Informed consent was obtained prior to immunization. Due
to the high proportion of newcomers in the affected population, language barriers and lack of
understanding of immunization needs were identified as challenges. . In some situations, oneon-
one interpreters were used to overcome these challenges.
