This is a letter I am writing to myself with three goals in it. I will open this letter in five years and decide whether or not I have achieved these goals. The goals I have set for myself are to learn Mandarin, to visit China, and to become more organized. Now I will explain why I chose these goals and how I plan to accomplish them.
First, I want to learn how to speak Mandarin Chinese. Right now, more than a quarter of the world’s population speaks Chinese. This includes the 690 million people in China, as well as the millions in Taiwan, Singapore, and Southeast Asia – in addition to those in America and Europe that also speak Chinese. Since we will certainly need more interpreters, I want to begin learning Mandarin now. This year, I plan either to take a class or to buy a program so I can learn and practice at home. Next year, I will hire a private tutor. I hope to be able to carry on a simple conversation in Mandarin within two years.
Next, I plan to save some money so that I can go to China within the next three years. As the sixth century BCE Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” In order to prepare for me trip, I will need to plan carefully. Next year, after I graduate, I will get a full-time job. With the money I earn, I will open a special savings account. Every month I will put some money into this account until have enough.
Finally, I would like to become more organized and not get so overwhelmed by things that I need to do. For example, at the beginning of every semester, I feel like I have so much to do-between work and school-and I just don’t know where to begin or what to do first. When I mentioned this to my mom, she said, “Make a to-do list! This will help you know where to start.” In order to achieve this goal, I will buy a special notebook and keep it with me all the time. When I need to remember something, I will write it down. Then every morning, just after I get up, I will review the to do list. My goal is to have a notebook in my pocket the day I open this letter.
In conclusion, I have set three goals for myself. In some ways, the third may be the most difficult for me, but it’s also the most important. Therefore, I will concentrate on that goal. In fact, unless I achieve that one, I doubt I will be able to accomplish the other two.
