paradoxically, few historians consciously advocate causal explanations. Like their colleagues working in other areas of social history, sport historians remain divided between those who assign causality to agents – individuals groups and organisations – acting in conscious pursuit of their goals, and those for whom the social and collective worlds of customs and laws variously rule, shape, order and structure (that is, cause) social outcomes.
