FIGURE 15.20 Deep-well injection involves disposing of liquid hazardous waste by pumping the material into deep, saline aquifers that are not used as a water supply. Shown here is a worst-case scenario where groundwater naturally flows upward, allowing the waste to contaminate freshwater aquifers via fractures and abandoned oil wells that have not been properly sealed. Contamination can also occur due to leakage along the casing of the injection well.
Human Waste
As late as the 1930s it was common for towns and cities in the United States to collect raw sewage (human waste mixed with water) from homes and businesses, and then discharge it directly into rivers and lakes. In rural areas people would dig a pit and place a wooden structure called an outhouse or pit toilet over the hole. Here human waste is partially broken down by anaerobic bacteria, which do not require oxygen, and is converted into compounds such as ammonia (NH3), The wastewater within the pit then seeps into the ground and the remaining solids, called sludge, continue to build, eventually forcing the owner to dig a new pit and move the outhouse. Because of the threat of spreading serious diseases through our water supplies, pit toilets and the discharging of raw municipal sewage are no longer acceptable practices in many countries.
Due to the type of things humans eat and drink, human waste largely consists of organic compounds rich in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous. However, the various types of bacteria and viruses within the waste threaten our water supplies and can lead to serious human illness and disease. In addition to the spread of disease, when aerobic bacteria break down organic matter in an oxygen-rich environment, the bacteria consume free oxygen (O2) and produce carbon dioxide (CO2). The problem is that the bacteria will keep consuming oxygen until either all the organic matter is decomposed, or the available oxygen is gone. Scientists use the term oxygen depletion to refer to the undesirable situation where aerobic bacteria remove enough of the dissolved oxygen from a lake or slow-moving stream that fish and other aquatic life begin to die. To help gauge the risk of oxygen depletion, biologists measure what is called biochemical oxygen demand or BOD, which is the amount of oxygen microorganisms would need to break down whatever organic matter is present within the water. When BOD is high, it is a sign that raw sewage may be entering a water body, creating both a risk of disease and oxygen depletion. Oxygen depletion, however, can also occur due to excess nutrient loading, which typically occurs in areas where agricultural fertilizers are used, followed by rains that wash nitrogen and phosphorus off into streams and lakes. The addition of these nutrients then promotes excessive algae growth (Figure 15.22), which eventually die and are broken down by aerobic bacteria. It is the excessive aerobic bacteria then that remove the oxygen from the water. Next, we will examine how dangerous pathogens and oxygen0demanding wastes are removed from wastewater before it is discharged into the environment.

Septic Systems
A septic system is a technique for treating wastewater from homes and small businesses that are not connected to municipal sewage systems. The EPA estimates that septic systems are used in 25% of all American homes. As illustrated in Figure 15.23, the system consists of two components: a septic tank and a drain field. Here wastewater is piped into the tank, which is made of concrete and sealed to prevent the waste from escaping. Most of the suspended organic matter settles out in the tank, forming a layer of sludge; the remainder either stays suspended or floats as a layer of scum. Because the tank is sealed, it contains very little oxygen, which means the organic wastes are only partially broken down by anaerobic bacteria-similar to a pit toilet. When additional wastewater enters the tank, some of the clarified wastewater will flow into the drain field where perforated pipes allow it to percolate through a bed of gravel. Because the gravel bed and underlying sediment are in the unsaturated zone, most of the remaining organic matter and harmful pathogens are either destroyed by aerobic bacteria, of filtered out as the wastewater percolates through the sediment.
Although a properly constructed and maintained septic system can last almost indefinitely, the EPA estimates that 10 to 20% of systems fail to operate properly. Perhaps the most common cause is that the drainage field is located in an area that is poorly drained. This allows the gravel bed and underlying sediment to become saturated, preventing the final aerobic breakdown of the waste. Poor drainage is usually the result of either the system being built too close to the water table, or the underlying sediment is not sufficiently permeable. A septic system can also fail when a homeowner does
FIGURE 15.22 Photo showing a section of the Canoochee River in coastal Georgia that is completely covered with algae and is experiencing severe oxygen depletion. The algae here are being fed by excessive nutrients. As the algae die and fall to the bottom of the river, aerobic bacteria break down the material and remove oxygen from the water.
FIGURE 15.23 Septic systems are used for household wastewater in areas that are not connected to municipal sewage systems. Wastewater first goes into a holding tank where solids settle out and anaerobic break down some of the organic matter. Water and suspended waste then leave the tank and flow into a drain field and percolate through an unsaturated gravel bed where the remaining organic matter and pathogens are removed by aerobic bacteria.
