Skeletal muscle has been recorded as a location for myxosporean parasites of freshwater fish since the end of the eighteenth century. Amongst others, Myxobolus pfeifferi, M. musculi, M. pseudodispar, Henneguya zschokkei, Thelohanellus pyriformis and T. fuhrmanni are common parasites in this tissue (Bykhovski 1962; Shulman 1966).
