Research suggests that as the number of risk factors accumulates across life domains the overall gravity of the situation increases [12,15,33]. Protective factors are those factors likely to enhance positive outcomes and to lessen negative consequences of exposure to risk, while resilience describes positive adaptation in the face of adversity [29]. Ungar argues that social and cultural contexts help to determine if specific factors andoutcomesare negativeorpositivefor an individual, making risk and resilience contextually specific constructs [34]. WBE may serve as a protective mechanism that enables at-risk youth to move out of adverse contexts through the development of resilience.
